Cinematic Musings

Film criticism for the curious movie-goer

An off-beat potpori of film musings and criticism, including complaints and lauds, as well as various trivial movie news and happenings.  Also including news and commentary on the television miracle known as '24'.

What's New?

1/25/09-Currently recapping '24' every Tuesday. Check in weekly for a recap of Monday's episode.
11/6/08-NEW LAYOUT!!! YAY!!!! Tell me if you like it. I do. It's pink and it seems less plain and booooring. Sorry I've been gone for a while. Work happened, but in atonement I have BUNCH of new reviews for you! So enjoy! Oh and if there is a film which isn't on here and you want me to review for you let me know. I'll watch it and review it! Oh, and who's excited for James Bond next week? Raise your hand!!!
4/1/08-Happy April Fool's day; a lot of great film type pranks are floating around out there. Make sure you get to Rotten Tomatoes and see what they've cooked up. 'Titanic 2'? I love you guys. Hysterical stuff. Zap2it's also got some links to great pranks and stuff. I think the best one there is 'Cloverfield' v. 'Transformers'. Isn't it illegal to combine movies like that? Maybe not. But get to Tomatoes; it's too clever. I'm still doing some reviews for you; I have 'Atonement' almost ready and I PROMISE it will be up very soon. I'm slacking news wise so I won't be doing catch-up since I've missed so much, but I WILL get those reviews up ASAP.
2/27/08-Get thee over to Yahoo movies and check out the new 'Indiana Jones' trailer. It's wonderful old school camp. Classic stuff.
2/3/08-Big news: James Bond, Hobbits, and more monsters. Check it out in 'news'. Also working on a 'Cloverfield' page devoted exclusively to my thoughts on it, because everyone else is doing it and 'Cloverfield' is new obsession no. 2.
1/28/08-I've got 'Cloverfield' up for you (minor spoilage, though) and 'The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything'. And 'Sweeney Todd' is coming. Oh and I very highly recommend 'Cloverfield'. It's amazing. Expect to see on my end of the year list. And 'Sweeney Todd' is my new obsession.
1/26/08-Reaction: Oscar noms DUDE. WTF. Seriously. Shameful! Ok, I admit, most of the films that got noms I haven't seen, but really. I know that Oscars tend to be more of a popularity contest than anything (films that deserve to be nominated or win don't because they just aren't popular enough... *coughBROKEBACKMOUNTAINcough*) but this year seems to be especially bad. Or at least the noms are; we'll see how the actual awards go. I'm still stung and have pretty much lost all faith in the Academy after 'Crash' won best picture, even after 'Brokeback' won best screenplay, and director, and everything else. I'll say it bluntly: 'Crash' sucked. It wasn't a good film. But Heaven forbid that a really excellent first-rate film about gay romance and cowboys should win. Oh no. (echoes of 'Shakespeare in Love' which is really one of the worst films I have ever seen beating 'Saving Private Ryan' which had more substance and heart and was more realistic than 'Shakespeare' will EVER be. Oh and have I mentioned the year with 'Titanic'? I don't really think I need to, actually.) Ok, granted I'm sure that many of those noms were well-deserved, but many of those noms, however well deserved, were given to films which were exceedingly popular, which makes me wonder how many films got snubbed. Speaking of snubbed, would someone please tell me why in the HELL Russell Crowe and Christian Bale were overlooked? Please? Nah. I didn't think you could. If the Golden Globes disappointed me, the Oscars made me hang my head in shame and cry. And what's with 'Enchanted'? I thought films like that didn't get nominated. See? Popularity. I look back to last year when 'Casino Royale' was ignored. True action films always get ignored (see the lack of 'Fuzz' this year). But can you deny Daniel Craig at least some recognition? 'Unforgiven' got it's due; why not 'Yuma'? And could someone PLEASE explain to me how 'Paprkia' was NOT nominated yet yellow suburbanites and surfing penquins did for best animated picture? And WHY did 'Sweeney Todd' and Tim Burton get short-changes? WHY????? I have finished my rant. For this page, anyways. Check out the section in my commentaries where I give you my Oscar picks in a perfect world. On the other hand congrats to Johnny Depp for another Oscar nom; if only he wins this one......
12/13/07-Reaction: Golden Globe noms. Well, there isn't much of a reaction, because basically every single film nominated was in limited release and I didn't get to see them. My town is so pathetic; we only have one independent film theater and it only gets one limited release film at a time. Sadness. Glad to see that 'Sweeney Todd' got some noms (heya Johnny Depp! :D); so going to see it; don't care about the blood. Also glad to see 'Enchanted' get a couple; the more I think about it the more I like that film. 'Atonement' got most of the noms; I am so dying to see this film. Really. But sadness, it doesn't look likely now. As for the others? HOW IN THE HELL did they leave out '3.10 to Yuma'. Seriously. WTF This is not cool. I am banking on it getting some Oscar noms; there will be hell to pay if it doesn't. Also, I am very sad that 'The Office' and 'Monk' were short changed; and '24' wasn't nominated; not much of a surprise because season six wasn't the greatest but I at least expected Keifer Sutherland to get a nom and he didn't. Too many tears this time!!! :( Sadness. Extreme. Here's hoping the Oscars are better. Come on! 'Pirates' all the way! (so not likely but I can dream)
12/09/07-I know, I suck at updating. We've learned this already. *sigh* So I humbled myself and bought 'Pirates 3' Tuesday, because I was near Wal-Mart Tuesday evening and I thought I'd save an extra trip and get it then. That and stupid Wal-Mart didn't have season six of '24'. Anywho. My younger sister Elizabeth (who is probably a bigger 'Pirates' fan than I am) wanted to watch it with me Friday evening. So we did. And oh dear, I hadn't forgotten anything in the film, nor had I forgotten it's love for me. But it pulled a new trick Friday; here is what happened. Elizabeth and I were watching, having fun, and musing on the film (she is not a critic and it annoys her when I practice my criticisms on her, so it was simply non-critical musing) and thinking out loud on certain things, and then came the part where Davy Jones is sitting at his organ all sad and depressed. I commented that I thought he was PMS-ing, hence the anger and mood swings. What followed this comment:

me: 'He's PMS-ing. He has to be. You can't have mood swings like that and be so angry and depressed all the time if you're not PMS-ing.'

Elizabeth: 'Yep.'

me (mockingly, to the TV): 'Sweetheart, see, if you just had a big chocolate chip cookie then everything would be ok and you would not be so sad and depressed and angry anymore.'

(Davy turns and looks directly at the camera very sad)

me: 'Omigod!!!!! OMG!!!! HE JUST TOTALLY LOOKED AT ME!!! HE HEARD ME!!! OMG!!!'

Elizabeth: (has fits of hysterical laughter): 'Yes, and see, he is sad now because he knows that there are no cookies to be had.'

me: 'OMG!!! OMG!!! What the heck??!!!!'

(more laughter) Coincidence? Good timing? I think not. See, if it were not for the conspiracies and such that abound in this film for my behalf, then I would dismiss this occurrence as happenstance. But it was not. Yes. Elizabeth would agree, and in fact she was the one who said this first. He heard me, and responded with sadness, for he knows a cookie is a cure for PMS, and yet he has no one to present him with such a gift. Perhaps he wished that I would do so; see, 'wish' is the key word here. Sigh. Oh dear. And here we go again!!! I wish I had found '24' instead. But clearly, these pirates had other plans.

11/19/07-Ok. So. I promised you a bunch of film reviews and obviously that hasn't happened yet. My excuse? I have been sick with the world's worst sinus infection for over a week now. But I am starting to get better. I am still working on those reviews, but for now there is a lot of news to catch up on: the strike, the next Bond film, 'Valkyrie' trailer!, among other things. Go to news. And I'm sorry for disappearing for so long.

11/07/07-The writer's strike is in full swing, and I am not a happy camper. Not just because they have ended the current season of 'The Office' early and not just because the strike means that either season seven of '24' will be cut short or it won't air at all in January, but also because I can't believe the stupidity of some people. Don't you know the word 'compromise'? I guess not. By the way in case you are wondering I am anti-strike. Obviously.

11/02/07-OMG OMG Have you seen the season 7 trailer for '24' yet? Get thee to the website of said show PRONTO. That's a direct order from the President. Dude. Angst going down January 13. I've added a bunch of film news about almost everything because I'm a slacker and can't (don't....) update. Also I hope you had a good Hallowe'en; mine was rather lame. I hardly watched any scary movies this year. Sob. Also, many film reviews coming soon: 'The Notebook' (yuck), another 'Star Wars' (more yuck), 'Chronicles of Narnia', and '1408' (catching up from summer slowly).

10/26/07-I didn't post this as news earlier because I figured by now everyone has heard the news and I actually heard about it a couple of days before the news itself got hold of this.....J.K. Rowling says that Dumbledore is gay. Fine. Who really cares. He's still cool and it doesn't change anything about the books. Get over yourselves fanpeople. I've also posted some film news for you about Mr. Bruckheimer's future prijects. :) Oh and the new season 7 '24' trailer is available at the show's website. Haha. Who can't wait? Raise your hand.

10/19/07-Some scary, truly scary, Hollywood film news has been added for you. And just in time for Hallowe'en, I've added some musings, a tribute list thing, honoring the ten scariest guys in film. I mean, the scariest movie villains ever. Check it out if you're feeling brave. ;)

10/18/07-Getting very bad at keeping up with updates; forgive me. There's some random news up, for ya; 'Wolverine', 'The Hobbit', and so on. It has also come to my attention that it is less than two months until my darling pirates and my beloved '24' arrive on DVD for me. One two three: YAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!

10/8/07-Ok, kidlets, I have a treat for you.....well, actually, it's not as if you couldn't find this yourself, because it's not like it's hard to find....but I have made finding it easier for you. Do you fancy some Tim Burton? Excited for December? Now you have reason to get more excited; the 'Sweeney Todd' trailer is available at Yahoo Movies. Wut now. I like Tim Burton. Sure I can't eat before or after watching some of his movies, but he has vision. He's a true artist. A bit weird (unique...) sure but he's still pretty cool. 'Sweeney Todd' looks to be pretty slick, but you might have to wait for a review from me; I think I'll be seeing this one after it arrives on DVD. Don't think I could handle all that blood in a theater. Uck. Oh well. Check it out, all ye Johnny Depp luvvers. (if you've seen it, did anyone else think he sounded exactly as he did as Jack Sparrow, same accent and everything? Did anyone else think this was kind of funny?). The link's above. Changing subjects here, if you have iTunes, I recommend getting your paws on Wes Anderson's 'Hotel Chevalier' (yes, THAT film with Natalie Portman). The good people at iTunes have so blessedly allowed us to get it for free (thank you Mr. Anderson if you had something to do with this) so you don't have to pay to get it!!! It's a little quirky but I liked it. Try it just for the record. You might be surprised (and don't get it just for that rumored scene with Miss Portman, come on you sick people).

10/1/07-It is with heavy heart that we mourn the passing of the delightful Miss Moneypenny. Lois Maxwell has died at age 80. We never got to see her hook up with James, and no more shall we hear her cheerful, perky voice on the line teasing Mr. Bond and getting things done for M. She might have been most famous for this role and starred in 14 Bond films, but this was hardly the only film she starred in. She won a Golden Globe in a Shirley Temple film, 'That Hagen Girl', as well as various TV shows and Stanley Kubrick's 'Lolita'. She has said that Moneypenny was the smallest role she ever played, which is funny because it's a big role and ironically what she's most known for. She was also a very good friend of fellow Bond man Roger Moore, whom she met at university in London. She was born in Kitchener, Canada in February 1927 and then moved to Britain as a teenager, later attending the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art where she met Mr. Moore. She later moved to Hollywood and then to Italy to work on movies, later moving back to Britain. She moved to Australia in 2002 to be closer to her son. She had been suffering from cancer for some time. Miss Moneypenny, we hardly knew ye. This is all so depressing. There is a bit of 'Lonesome Dove' news for you in the news section to get your mind off of Ms. Maxwell's departure.

news 9/26/07-I've posted some random news items from around the web; 'X-Men', 'X-Files', and etc.

news 9/24/07-my favorite funny guys come back for another film! Heehee

news 9/19/07--DUDE. There was no way I wasn't going to add this. Season seven of my beloved '24' has a premier date: Jan. 13. As usual, it will be two hours over two days before it goes to one hour each week. So a four hour premier over two days (or two hours one day and same for the next, whichever). But that is not what is important. It is confirmed by Mr. Howard Gordon and his fellow '24' creators that TONY ALMEIDA RETURNS!!! YES! It is true! He isn't dead!!!!! I wondered if something was up because he didn't get the silent clock when he died in season five. Alas Michelle and David Palmer and Edgar and Curtis still remain dead. But not Tony......someone loves me out there. Of course, they'll explain what was going on; they would have to. Dude. If I were Carlos Bernard, I would freak out. Wait. I am freaking out!!! I wonder how this will play out; rumor is this next season is set in DC with some bits in LA. I hope it's better than last season, which was good but not I admit not great (I admitted the unthinkable! I still liked it though). January is going to be slow to arrive. I can feel it. This is like the greatest news I have ever uncovered. Woot yeah. Someone loves me. Tony=superman source:Zap2it
