Me in a nutshell

My name is Katie.  I have recently graduated from college with a BA in English Literature.  It was one of my professors who put me on the path of film criticism.  Sadly this is only a hobby.  I'm not getting paid to do this, but hopefully someday....

I'm picky when it comes to which films I like; they have to be outstanding in my book.  But I am open minded and have favorites in many different genres.  I have curious tastes, and if you happen to be a friend of mine you know how hard it is to predict which films I'll like.  For example: I love 'Brokeback Mountain', but tend to shy away from romances.  I love the great films like 'King Kong' and 'Master and Commander', but I hate science fiction (I despise 'Star Wars').  I love films that are well done, very good films, classics I guess you could call them.  Yet I absolutely love my 'Pirates of the Caribbean', which are the sorriest and probably the most pointless group of films ever.  I enjoy some Westerns as well.  As for favorite actors, Tommy Lee Jones is sublime, but I have a hidden connection with the uber-awesome Bill Nighy (oh he's so cool :) ).  Directors wise I fancy Peter Weir and Ang Lee, among others.  I also really, really like Clint Eastwood Westerns (you have no idea; he's right up there with Bill as one of my favorite guys).  So as you can see there is no set pattern or method to my tastes, but I do value that which is the cream of the crop above all others.  And I'm picky.  I have no particular favorite film critics, but I do like Roger Ebert.  And Danny Peary, but only because he makes me laugh.

I am from California but currently live in Indiana; that might explain my interest in film.  I believe that all films are not created equal, and that not everyone is a film critic.  Some people have a gift for understanding film and some people don't.  You decide which category I fall into, although I hope it is the former.  I rate films by grading them, A-F (A obviously the best, and so forth).  I do this because I feel this method is more accurate at telling you how good a film is or isn't.  I grade films by quality, meaning how well it is made.  I try to look at all aspects, directing, acting, musical composition, etc., but each of these things might or might not be including in a review.  And of course I take into account how much I liked a film, although this is hardly what constitues most of a review or how I grade a film.  I also assume that either you have seen the film, or if you haven't don't mind mild spoilers.  I try to not include spoilers in my reviews (I don't like them; I feel that they take away from the first impression and experience of the film, which is crucial in adequate criticism) but I can't guarantee that the reviews don't contain any spoilers.  I apologize if this bothers you.  My grading scale is as follows:
A+--the best. Absolute perfection.  A modern miracle.  Don't miss.  At all.
A--high quality entertainment.  Nearly perfect.  It's got class and style.
A- --except for a few glitches, it's excellent.
B+--very good, but there are flaws.  But still worth something.
B--a decent film; quite entertaining.  Worth a watch.
B- --flawed but worthy; probably one I really like but have issues with (probably a film I love yet can't grade higher and refuse to grade lower)
C+--not bad, but not good either.
C--average, in the middle.
C- --not a complete waste of time....but close to it.
D+--not very good.  Pretty pathetic
D--pretty bad.  Why you should lose faith in the film industry.
D- --waste of time.  Nearly as low as dirt.
F--don't even think about it.  Not even if your life depended on it.  Lower than dirt.
